Why ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini Make You Wait (and How to Speed Them Up)

You type a question, hit enter, and then you wait. Sometimes the answer starts right away. Sometimes you watch a little “thinking” animation for what feels like forever.

If you use AI tools every day, those pauses add up. Let’s look at why they happen, what you can do about them, and why the wait isn’t always a bad thing.

What happens after you press enter

An AI chatbot doesn’t look up a finished answer somewhere. It writes the answer piece by piece, in small chunks called tokens. A token is roughly part of a word. The model predicts one token, then the next, then the next, until the answer is done.

Before it can start, it also has to read everything in the conversation: your new message, all the earlier messages, and any files you added. The longer that history, the more work there is before the first word appears.

So the wait has two parts:

  1. Time to first word. Reading your conversation and, for some models, thinking it through.
  2. Writing time. Producing the answer token by token, which is why you see text appear gradually.

Why some answers take much longer

1. “Thinking” or reasoning models

Many AI apps now offer models that reason before they answer. They work through the problem step by step in the background, which often gives better results for math, code and tricky questions, but it can add many seconds, sometimes minutes.

2. Long conversations

If you’ve kept the same chat going for days, the model rereads all of it every time. That’s a common, invisible cause of slow replies.

Uploading a PDF, asking about an image or letting the AI browse the web means extra steps before the answer. Each tool call takes time.

4. Busy hours

These services are used by huge numbers of people. When lots of people are online at once, responses can slow down. Free plans are usually the first to feel it.

5. Long answers

Asking for “a detailed 2,000-word guide” simply takes longer to write than “one sentence”.

6. Your connection or browser

A weak connection, a VPN, or a browser full of heavy extensions can make the page feel slow even when the AI is fine.

8 ways to make AI answers faster

  1. Start a new chat for a new topic. This is the single biggest fix for slow replies in long conversations.
  2. Pick a faster model for simple tasks. Save the “thinking” models for problems that need them.
  3. Be specific. “Summarize this in 3 bullet points” is faster than “tell me about this”.
  4. Ask for shorter answers. You can always ask for more detail afterwards.
  5. Split big jobs. Instead of one giant request, ask in steps.
  6. Check the service status page if everything suddenly feels slow. Sometimes the problem isn’t on your side.
  7. Refresh or reopen the tab if an answer looks stuck halfway.
  8. Turn off extensions you don’t use. Fewer extensions means a lighter, faster browser.

Is waiting always bad?

Not really. The fact that a model takes a few extra seconds to think is often why the answer is good. Reasoning models in particular trade speed for quality, and for hard questions that’s usually a good deal.

The annoying part isn’t the waiting itself. It’s that the time is empty. You can’t do much in fifteen seconds, so you just stare at the screen.

Making the wait worth something

That empty moment is exactly what Waitnai uses. It’s a small browser extension that shows one short sponsored line while ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is generating, and pays you 50% of what the advertiser paid for that view.

  • It only appears while the AI is working, and disappears when the answer is done.
  • It’s one line of text, not a pop-up or a video.
  • It never reads your prompts or the AI’s answers.

The money per view is small (about a tenth of a cent at typical prices), so it isn’t a way to get rich. But if you send dozens of prompts a day, it turns time you were going to spend waiting anyway into a little steady income. We break down the real numbers in can you really get paid to use ChatGPT?

Quick summary

  • AI answers take time because the model reads your whole conversation and writes the reply word by word.
  • Thinking models, long chats, files and busy hours make it slower.
  • New chats, faster models and specific prompts make it faster.
  • Some waiting is the price of better answers, and with Waitnai those seconds can earn you a little on the side.
