Can You Really Get Paid to Use ChatGPT? An Honest Look

If you search for “how to make money with ChatGPT”, you get the same list every time. Write blog posts with it. Start a freelance copywriting business. Sell prompts. Build a course.

Those can work. But they all have one thing in common: they turn ChatGPT into a second job. You still have to find clients, sell something, and put in the hours.

This post is about a much smaller, much lazier idea. What if you just got paid a little for using ChatGPT the way you already do?

The short answer

Yes, it’s possible, and it’s not a scam when it’s done openly. But the amounts are small. Think “covers a coffee or a streaming subscription”, not “quit your job”.

That honesty matters. Anyone who promises big money for doing nothing is selling you something.

How “getting paid to use AI” actually works

When you send a prompt to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, there’s a pause. The model reads your message, works out an answer and starts writing. Sometimes it’s two seconds. With longer questions, file uploads or “thinking” models, it can be twenty seconds or more.

During that pause, you’re looking at the screen and not doing much. That attention has value to advertisers, the same way a billboard at a bus stop has value because people are waiting there anyway.

Waitnai is a browser extension built around exactly that moment:

  1. You send a prompt like you normally would.
  2. While the AI is generating, one short sponsored line appears below your message. One line of text, like “Learn a language while you wait”.
  3. When the answer is done, the line goes away.
  4. Advertisers pay for those views, and you get 50% of what they pay.

There’s no clicking required, no surveys, and no points system. The balance is in dollars.

The real math (no hype)

Advertisers bid a price per 1,000 views. This is called CPM, cost per mille. Prices move with demand, but here’s a worked example with round numbers:

If an advertiser pays Per single view Your 50% share
$2.00 per 1,000 views $0.002 $0.001
$4.00 per 1,000 views $0.004 $0.002

So at a $2 price, every prompt where the line shows earns you about a tenth of a cent.

What does that look like over a month?

How you use AI Prompts per day Rough monthly earnings at $2 CPM
Light (a few questions) 15 about $0.45
Daily (work + personal) 60 about $1.80
Heavy (developer, writer, student) 150 about $4.50

If advertisers bid more, those numbers go up. If there’s no ad to show at that moment, you don’t earn for that prompt. You can play with your own numbers on our earnings calculator.

Is that life-changing? No. Is it money for something you were going to do anyway? Yes. That’s the whole pitch.

Why it’s 50/50

A lot of “get paid” apps keep most of the money and pay you in points that convert at a bad rate. We think that’s why people stopped trusting them.

Waitnai splits the ad money down the middle. Half goes to you, half keeps the service running (servers, ad review, fraud checks, support). The split is shown on the how it works page, not buried in the terms.

“Okay, but what’s the catch?”

Fair question. Here are the honest trade-offs:

  • You see one sponsored line while the AI thinks. It’s text only. No pop-ups, no video, nothing that follows your mouse. You can dismiss it.
  • Earnings are held for 30 days. This protects advertisers from fake traffic. After 30 days, your earnings move to “available”.
  • There’s a minimum payout (currently $10). It’s set so payment fees don’t eat your earnings.
  • It only pays when there’s an advertiser. On a quiet day, some prompts won’t show a line, so they won’t earn.

What it doesn’t do is read your chats. The extension only watches for the “AI is generating” state on the page, the same signal that makes the stop button appear. It never reads what you type or what the AI answers. We explain exactly how in our post on whether AI browser extensions are safe.

Who this is actually for

This makes sense if you:

  • use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini most days, for work or study
  • like the idea of small, automatic income and don’t want another side hustle
  • are fine with seeing one line of sponsored text during a pause you already sit through

It’s probably not for you if you hate any ads at all, or if you only use AI once a week. That’s okay too.

How to start

  1. Create a free account. Email, or one click with Google.
  2. Add the Waitnai browser extension (it’s coming to the Chrome Web Store soon) and log in once.
  3. Use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini exactly like before.

Your dashboard shows each view and what it earned, so you can see the numbers add up for yourself.

The bottom line

You can get paid to use ChatGPT, but only a little, and only if the service is honest about it. If you already spend part of your day waiting for AI answers, it’s a reasonable way to turn that dead time into a small, steady side income without changing anything about how you work.

If you want to understand the waiting part better, read why ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini make you wait.
